Project Cranium – More Profit, Less Carbon
Rossendale, Lancashire
Our Story
Project Cranium is IoT Horizon’s smart building platform that offers real-time monitoring and automation of air quality, electricity, heating and lighting that will make buildings smarter, greener, and more cost-efficient. IoT Horizon are a leading Internet of Things (IoT) specialist based in the North West and are uniquely placed to deliver IoT solutions for commercial and industrial businesses by helping companies break down technology barriers to improve existing operations, reduce energy consumption and exploit new lines of revenue.
To meet climate change targets by 2050 every building will need to hit the Net Zero energy-use reduction goal. Doing so will go a long way in reducing the commercial and industrial carbon footprint, with the built environment contributing 40% of the worlds energy usage.
To combat this we have developed a sensor that provides useful metrics to businesses that allows them to make more informed decisions on people and buildings. This data can identify where improvements need to be made to meet Net Zero targets, whilst also reducing running costs and saving money on their energy bills.
The Challenge
A huge challenge for all IoT projects is turning the concept into reality. 30% of projects fail due to the bottom-line benefits being unclear against the implementation costs, as well as elongated timescales and business reluctant to write off what’s already been invested. And for those who have been unsuccessful, there is a natural reluctance to go again, despite favourable benefits.
To encourage and accelerate the successful adoption of our IoT, we developed a four-stage process to “MPWR” our clients. This process learns and builds on the previous experience and knowledge, allowing rapid ideation through executive and onto rollout and adoption.
Our clients are then given the opportunity to assess progress, costs, and benefits to decided whether they want to continue or not. It’s really important to initially figure out whether the idea or product is commercially viable. Identify what the benefit is to a business, whether it’s cost savings, productivity improvements, or a reduction in carbon. Then you need to make sure you have people within your business that can effectively communicate the benefits of the tech to potential
clients.
Our Solution
We provide a solution to track and regulate environments to reduce energy consumption whilst maintaining a health indoor environment for occupants. There is a growing awareness that the quality of the air we breath has a significant impact on health, wellbeing and productivity. We are estimated to spend 90% of our time indoors with air quality that is 5 times more polluted than outdoor air.
Our sensors allow businesses to not only shave off their carbon emissions, but provides opportunities to reduce operating costs and overheads by identifying patterns in a business and automates building systems to make smarter decisions.
The sensors also regulate temperatures and Co2 levels, allowing for improvements in productivity. Commercial buildings on average waste around 30% of their energy. The data as a whole can make huge financial and energy savings. We predict that 1.5 tonnes of Co2 can be saved per building per year if they adopt our IoT. We provided our services with a local council to measure 200 storage heaters, and after analysing the data, we were able to save the council £10,000 per year.
