Protos
Ellesmere Port, Cheshire
Our Story
Protos sits at the heart of the North West’s industrial cluster – a sprawling area home to a group of energy intensive industries which use around 5% of the UK’s energy, with the Cheshire West and Chester Council the fourth largest emitter of carbon in the UK. This presented us with a significant challenge; reducing our carbon emissions whilst maintaining the vital industries which are at the forefront of our economy.
We created a vision to create a strategic hub for resource management; getting the most value from our planets resources and using them in the most sustainable way. This philosophy has been the driving force behind the project from day one and adapts to local, regional, national and global drivers.
The Challenge
Our vision was to create a strategic energy and resource hub which could provide low carbon energy to industry, helping them decarbonise and keep high value manufacturing jobs in the UK.
We aim to work collaboratively with a number of businesses and authorities, local and national across the Net Zero space and strive to work with innovative companies that provide cutting-edge tech that will help deliver the infrastructure of tomorrow.
We bring people and industries together; for example our flagship plastic park provides a one stop shop for plastic waste and clusters together recycling and treatment technologies. We aim to bring together technologies which are leading the way on solutions to climate change and through collaboration, Protos provides a supportive environment where ideas can come to life.
Our Solution
Our collaboration across various industries has allowed us to develop innovative solutions to the multi-faceted problem that is reaching Net Zero. We currently house a windfarm, a biomass plant, an energy-from-waste plant, and have planning consent to build a UK first Plastic Park, which takes everyday non-recyclable plastic waste and turn into a local source of hydrogen that will provide a clean fuel for HGV’s, buses and cars.
We’ve also got a hydrogen refueling station in the works that will kickstart the infrastructure needed to support the rollout of hydrogen vehicles. Here at Peel NRE, we’ve been championing hydrogen for a number of years, including being one of the founding members of the North West Hydrogen Alliance and working closely with UK’s leading hydrogen and carbon capture project HyNet North West. But we know that Hydrogen production at this point in time doesn’t help answer all the questions. Carbon Capture, utilisation and Storage will be a key technology to help the UK in its fight against climate change, and after high demand from potential occupiers, we’re making Protos carbon capture ready. We’ve received government funding to develop a carbon capture facility with with our partners at InBECCS, Ince Bio Power and Bioenergy Infrastrucure Group.
