Our Story
The ReWire project is a research project funded by Innovate UK, the UK Government’s innovation support service. Our aim is to demonstrate how Smart Local Energy Systems can be developed in the future and It is part of the Prospering from the Energy Revolution Smart Local Energy Systems Programme.
We work with Warrington Council and a consortium of 10 partners across the energy sector to develop plans to decarbonise the borough of Warrington and identify the investments and business models that are required to make it happen. We have created a cutting edge ‘Digital Twin’ simulation of the Warrington built environment that supports this process.
The project was formed by Pure Leapfrog, a merge of two charities dedicated to the support of community energy, and draws on its expertise in carbon, sustainable finance, energy systems, and natural capital that promote our wider goals of sustainability and decarbonisation.
The Challenge
Smart Local Energy Systems should be an important part of cutting carbon in the future, but we need the tools to help create them now. ReWire is a research project exploring new design system and business models for locality whole system decarbonisation.
It relies on outputs to inform future work, and our challenge was accessing the data required to build our ‘Digital Twin’ model and to effectively engage with the local community, which is vital for the project to work . This was made harder due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Our Solution
Our ‘Digital Twin’ goes a long way in helping to optimise local energy infrastructure by modelling local energy scenarios. From this it enables us to identify various scenarios to be tested and so help plan the optimisation of local energy infrastructure to save carbon and costs.
This in turn, allows us to suggest business models and support local infrastructure projects in realising a smart local energy system, which in turn, will play an important part of our national decarbonisation. This model is hoped to act as a blueprint that can be adopted nationwide in the future
